Curling, cupping, or buckling: Shingles that are no longer flat and have warped are often a sign of age, sun exposure, or poor attic ventilation. This can compromise the roof's waterproofing.
Cracking: Cracks in the shingles can be caused by wind or by the natural aging process, making them brittle over time. Cracks allow water to get underneath the shingle layers.
Missing or loose shingles: High winds can blow shingles off or loosen them. This leaves the roof and the underlying structure exposed to the elements.
Missing granules: Look for patches on your shingles that appear dark or "bald," which indicates the protective granules have worn off. You may also find an accumulation of these granules in your gutters.
Blistering: Bumps or blisters on the shingle surface can form when moisture is trapped inside the shingle

Water stains or leaks: Check ceilings and walls for discoloration, spots, or streaks, which indicate water is leaking through the roof.
Sunlight shining through: Go into your attic on a sunny day and see if you can spot any rays of light coming through the roof. If light can get in, so can water.
Sagging roof deck: Look for sagging or uneven areas in the attic's roof sheathing, which indicates that water has damaged the wood.
Wet insulation or mold: Check your attic insulation for signs of dampness or mold, which point to a moisture problem
